Metal braces don't have to be noticeable. Although there are multiple orthodontic options that don't use metal brackets, such as Invisalign and ceramic braces, there are metal alignment options that are discreet. Here are two of them:

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are braces that are placed on the back surface of your teeth, which is adjacent to your tongue. The brackets of the lingual braces are made of metal. However, when you smile or speak, they are not easily seen due to their positioning.

Still, lingual braces straighten teeth as effectively as traditional metal braces. In addition, the placement of the braces makes them safer for sports that may result in facial impact. With traditional braces, a blow to the mouth from a ball or other item can easily cut the interior of your lips and cheeks. The braces are also more suitable for people who play wind instruments, since the lips can be more easily pursed without braces on the front of the teeth.

Cost of Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are more expensive than traditional metal braces. Lingual braces are usually priced between $8,000 and $10,000. Conventional braces are typically priced between $3,000 and $7,000.

Damon System Braces

Damon system braces have smaller brackets than traditional metal braces. The smaller bracket size makes the braces less noticeable. In addition, the brackets are designed to be self-litigating, which means that the brackets don't require elastic ligatures to hold the archwire in place.

Damon system braces have brackets that are constructed with tiny tunnels through which the archwire runs. Since the archwire is not attached to the brackets with elastic bands, there is less friction for the braces to overcome as they straighten your teeth. Thus, Damon system braces allow your orthodontic treatment to be completed faster with fewer trips to the orthodontist.

In addition, the Damon system braces can promote better oral hygiene. The elastic bands of traditional braces can trap bacteria and make it more difficult for brackets to be thoroughly cleaned.

Cost of Damon Braces

Damon system braces are comparable in price to traditional braces. They usually cost $3,800 to $7,000

If your teeth are misaligned, there are many different alignment options available. However, not every orthodontic option may be suitable for your alignment needs. To learn which tooth-straightening appliances can be used to effectively straighten your teeth, schedule an appointment with an orthodontist. He or she can assess your misalignment and bite to find a solution.
